ATSF SDF40-2 5253 waits at Caliente, CA for a meet in January 1991. Santa Fe purchased 18 of these locomotives from Amtrak, where they had been considered derail prone and rebuilt them for freight service. Because of their limited rear visibility the big cowl units were usually relegated to trailing units. They served reliably until replaced by newer units after the BNSF merger.
