ATSF GE B40-8W 552 east leads GP60M 147, an SD45u and another B40-8W with a long intermodal west of Vaughn, NM in October 1995 as this area was being double tracked. By this time the 4-axle B40-8W's and their EMD GP60-M counterparts were already being challenged by new 6-axle wide cab units as the motive power of choice for the fast intermodal trains. The trains were getting heavier and ultimately the 4-axle units were bumped down into secondary power and today they are often seen on locals and work trains rather than the hotshots for which they were originally purchased.
