Amtrak control cab car 9642 guides the Vermonter into Palmer, MA on a gloomy summer 1994 day. The train is approaching the New England Central RR diamond (formerly Central of Vermont). After crossing the diamond, the train will reverse direction, and with the locomotive now leading, will cross over from the Conrail (former Boston and Albany, now CSX) track to the New England Central track to continue its journey northward to Vermont. The control cab car 9642 began life as self-propelled Metroliner 803. It was converted to the cab car configuration for the Atlantic City run. Retired from Amtrak in 1996, it was acquired by the Federal Railroad Administration and remodeled and outfitted as Track Geometry testing car T-16 (DOTX 216).
