BNSF 6807 at Dalies, NM on February 24, 2012.

BNSF ES44C4's 6807 and 6835 are no longer rare examples of the AC technology that may eliminate future DC locomotive orders. These ES44C4's are becomming common on important intermodal trains. The 4 AC motor units are evidently priced comptetively with conventional 6 motor DC units. While the A1A trucks with the middle axle raise capability is complex, the lack of two traction motors lowers the unit costs. When additional tractive effort is necessary, the middle axle is raised enough to put more weight on the four powered axles to increase tractive effort. However, the middle axle lift doesn't completely lift free of the track as weight on the four powered axles would then exceed the maximum allowable axle weight.
