CSX 6423 with a sizeable power consist passes through Garrett, PA in July, 1998.

CSX GP40-2 6423 leads a seven unit power consist through Garrett, PA in July 1998. Three of the units are "Road Mate" slugs. They have had their diesel engines removed, ballast added, and kept their traction motors. The traction motors draw current from their attached "mother" unit. This gives increased traction effort, albeit with a slower speed than a "fully" powered consist. The 2nd and 4th units in this train are converted GP-30's. They retain their cab controls and dynamic brakes but must run paired with a power unit.
