San Luis Rio Grande FP40H 459 (ex Amtrak 264, ex Canadian American RR 459) awaits its 9AM departure with its "mixed train" early on August 22, 2007. On this day the passenger train also had a side dump gondola full of rip rap to be dumped and two Herzog hoppers to be spotted at Fort Garland, so what we had was a mixed train. This trip is worth your time. Everyone is professional, yet very friendly and helpful. The scenery is great (it will be better in foliage season which will occur in mid-late September). In addition to the scenery, we saw several bear, an elk herd and numerous small critters (coyotes and jackrabbits).
