Union Pacific 844(4) and Southern Pacific 4449 climb Cajon Pass together on May 8, 1989.

Twenty years ago - Union Pacific 844(4) and Southern Pacific 4449 put on the Grand Finale to their visit to southern California on May 8, 1989 as they climb the Cajon Pass grade together. Both locomotives had been part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Los Angeles Union Station. As they made this climb, traffic on Interstate 15 halted to watch the show, and hundreds, myself included, lined old highway 66 below the interstate.
