Union Pacific SD40-2 3642 leads 3 more SD40-2's with a stacker moving through the horseshoe curve at Oxman, Oregon in August 1998.

Union Pacific SD40-2 3642 leads a double stack through the horseshoe curve at Oxman, Oregon in August 1998. The twilight mood is fitting for this set of motive power because new high horsepower units are taking their place on the premier assignments. SD60's and C40-8's are displacing the reliable workhorse SD40-2's. Until the late 1980's, UP's large fleet of SD40-2's, and to a lesser extent, the GE C30-7's were usually on the point of the "Z" trains. At the time this picture was made, they were still a significant presence, but the days of classic sets of solid SD40's was passing.
