UP SD40-2 3702 leads an eastbound manifest near Bosler, Wyoming in August 1993.

Union Pacific SD40-2 3702 along with two other 40-2's and a C30-7 leads a manifest across the high plains of Wyoming near Bosler in August 1993. A few years earlier these engines would have been on the point of fast "Z" trains, but by 1993 age and the new SD60's and C40-44's have relegated them to lesser duties. In the 1980's after UP's earlier fleet rationalization, railfans complained that all one saw were SD-40's and C30-7's. Today the C30's are long off the roster but a sizeable number of SD40-2's remain in service. However their numbers and visibility have been overshadowed by large numbers of the newer wide cab units. Most remaining SD40-2's including the 3702, received a major mid-life rebuild during the late 1990's and are still seen even on "Z" trains, but who knows for how long. The original GE C40's and the EMD SD60's that replaced them are now 17 years old! The 3702 later served a stint as a switcher in Hinkle, Oregon, but was returned to freight service.
