Union Pacific SD70M 4003 has just passed under the former Milwaukee road's flyover of then Rock Island's spine line at Cambridge, IA on May 29, 2008. The leaden sky on this day spawned many showers and thunderstorms which contributed more moisture to the already rain soaked land and ultimately to the line's closure south of Des Moines. Both the Rock Island and the Milwaukee entered bankruptcy almost at the same time. The Chicago & Northwestern acquired the Spine Line which runs from Minneapolis to Kansas City, while the Milwaukee's Iowa main line, which largely paralleled the CNW main line across Iowa, was abandoned. CNW's Spine Line acquisition caused some of the former Chicago Great Western main line which CNW acquired earlier to become redundant and subsequently abandoned. Union Pacific 4003 was the 4th UP SD70M produced.
