Union Pacific SD60M 6124 leads an interesting consist which includes CNW SD50 7009 and, the last unit UP U30C 2922 (the last one I saw in service). This train is leaving Buffalo Bend (Point of Rocks) NE in November 1989. This power consist illustrates a changing of the guard in UP power. The first and second units (UP 6124 and UP 6195) are in the initial EMD wide cab SD60M design while the final three units are an SD40-2, a C30-7 and a U30C. These three types of power along with the SD40 had been UP's prime power through the mid 1980's. The SD60's, SD60M's. C36-8's, C40-9's, and C40-9W's were the beginning of the major power change, and of the older types only the workhorse SD40-2 survives on UP's roster today. Meanwhile the SD60 and C40-9 series are now nearing their twentieth birthdays and who knows how long they will remain on the rosters.
